Coconut farmers across the Globe risk about 10% of their crop due to an insect called Red Palm Weevil. This insect lay their eggs in the trunk of trees and the larvae grow eating the fibre. Sri Lanka produces about 2% of the Global coconut supply, and the annual loss to those farmers is around US$ 2 million. This is big compared to their economy. Over few years of research in collaboration with the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka, I have developed a portable detector that was tested and proved to be about 96% accurate. This is the only available detector in the World, but the manufacturing cost is too high (US$ 60). Even sold at cost, the farmers find it difficult to afford it. I have now started a joint effort with a London based crowd funding group called Walacea to raise funds to develop a mobile app and some hardware to get rid of the expensive portable processor. This way, we hope to bring the unit price to about US$ 10, which is affordable to most farmers in developing countries. It is a big cut from US$ 60 to US$ 10.
